26 October 2022, 19.30 – 21.30

Stephen McCarthy will present and talk about his new book:

God, Who on Earth are you? Mystery and meaning in Christianity today.

Many people today are falling away from Christianity, yet still search for meaning in their lives, have some sense of the transcendent Other and often consider themselves to be ‘spiritual but not religious’.

As Christians we know that God reaches out towards everyone and we know that the Christian story centred round Jesus’ Incarnation, Crucifixion and Resurrection is a uniquely powerful, but also deeply mysterious, story of a compassionate God – not only Creator of the whole abundant Universe but also deeply in love with each one of us.

We have a joyful story to tell! Yet the Churches – Catholic and others – with their routines and institutional rubrics seem to have grown tired and are failing to transmit the wonderment and mystery of the Christian story.

Author

Despite studying Physics at Oxford, Stephen spent his working life as a development economist – first for six years in Botswana and then at the EIB. After taking early retirement he trained and practised as a spiritual director. He has authored a couple of previous books relating to economic development and also edited The Contagion of Jesus by Sebastian Moore, which was shortlisted for a theology prize. He is currently working on a new book with the possible title: The Slow Work of God. Stephen and his wife have now lived in Luxembourg for more than forty years and took out Luxembourg citizenship several years ago.
